The Angelina & Neches River Railroad Company was founded in the late 1880s as a logging route to serve the Angelina County Lumber company near Lufkin, Texas. In 1900, when lumbering reached its peak in East Texas, the line was chartered by the State of Texas as a common carrier. By 1911, the line extended a distance of some 30 miles from Keltys to Chireno. The A&NR ran a "mixed train" daily until 1952 hauling miscellaneous freight to and from communities along its' route. occasionally, a few passengers rode in a coach or the railroad caboose. During the Depression in the 1930s, the line also used an automobile with railroad wheels to transport passengers. In addition to its' service as a logging route, the line hauled lumber, cotton, foundry products and other goods to and from small communities in Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties connecting with the Cottonbelt and Southern Pacific mainlines in Lufkin. With the completion of Southland Paper Mill in 1940, the line added paper to its manifest. And, in the 1960s, a plywood plant was built at Keltys and plywood began moving over the line. A&NR converted to standard gauge track in 1906, purchased its first diesel locomotive in 1949, and retired its last steam locomotive #208 in 1964.

Photographs courtesy of Lowell G. McManus  Great shots.  I've never seen photos of the 2000 with those extra logos.  It is a GP38-2 built new for the A&NR in 1980.  It's Numbered 2000 because that's its horsepower.  Their SW1500 is the 1500, but their Alco S4 was number 12.
